Texas Certification and Clinical Teaching
Working with beginning teachers is one of the highlights of my career. While teaching elementary music, I had the opportunity to work with a student teacher for a semester. The growth in her teaching during that one semester was tremendous and I really enjoyed helping her design clear lesson plans for teaching young children. Now, at Lamar University, I help students prepare for the Texas Certification Exams, Music Content EC – 12 (177) and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC – 12 (160) prior to clinical teaching, and supervise the clinical teachers for the music department. Helping clinical teachers develop and practice strategies for teaching junior high and high school music students is incredibly rewarding and is one way that I support our local music schools. Below are links to study materials for the certification exams.

Woodwind and Double Reed Methods
Woodwind and Double Reed Methods are the first points of contact I have with Music Education students that are not clarinet majors. I get to see them again in my music education class, that prepares them for certification, before they are off to student teach, where I am privileged to their field supervisor. Seeing the full process has allowed me to build a course that is practical and useful for them when they become music educators. While the class is rooted in playing the instrument, a large portion of the class is dedicated to teaching the instrument, solving common problems, and developing clear teaching goals.

The text for this course is "Beginning Woodwind Class: A Manuel for College and Middle School Classrooms," compiled and edited by Jan Scott, with a special chapter by 2020 Grammy Educator of the Year, Mickey Smith, Jr., Management Action Plan. The book has quick tips and steps for teaching woodwinds, common problems, and fingering charts. It also includes a plan for classroom management and goals for the first year of teaching.

The book was developed by Jan Scott and Mickey Smith Jr. through the service-learning program at McNeese State University. In 2020, Mickey Smith Jr. was recognized as the Grammy Educator of the Year and Jan Scott presented "Educating in the Music Classroom through Service-Learning" at the 2022 NAfME Conference. Both Jan Scott and Mickey Smith Jr. have joined given virtual master classes to our students in Woodwind Methods.
